You might be surprised to know that this holiday is celebrated more in America than in Mexico! This day actually was intended as a commemoration of a pivotal battle that took place in Puebla, Mexico, May 5th of 1862, when the Mexican forces defeated the French forces. However, today, in America, it is more a way of celebrating the Mexican culture itself. Most of us have an affinity for Mexican food and delicious margaritas, and then there is the festive music and those hot Latin dances, so celebrating Cinco De Mayo is both tasty and fun! For a great evening right here on the North Shore we would like to suggest Luibueno’s. On May 5th , from 4-10pm, they will be having an indoor-outdoor event with food and drink specials, a live music line up as well as a DJ, and even some free giveaways! There will be a cover charge of $5 and it is well worth it because the food and ambience here is always superb!
On May 4th, from 5-10pm, in downtown Honolulu, at Nuuanu and Hotel Streets there will be a large street party with Salsa and Mariachi Bands, Ballet Folklorico exhibitions, live music, DJ’s, and an appearance by Miss Latino Hawaii, Steisha Sheather. The streets will be covered in Mexican decoration and there will be lots of mexican food to enjoy. Our own Cholo’s restaurant will have a food truck set up for the event. Whichever way you choose to celebrate, even if it is with your own party at home, we hope you have a Happy Cinco De Mayo as you enjoy all things Mexican!
