Capturing your experience in Hawaii with photographer Harold Alvea

The Seek Spot team recently sat down with a new member of the Seek Spot partner family- Harold Alvea from Alvea Studios.

Tell us about a recent experience shooting photos that expresses why you do what you do?
A family from San Diego flew to Hawaii a couple of weeks ago to have a little break from their busy lives and have their little one enjoy the beach for a while. Taking their photos reminded me how amazing photos can be – it captures the little things long after you have forgotten those details.

It preserves the memories and the moments that are passing. Then, when you look at them later, you are taken back to the time when it was photographed. Sort of like a time machine.

What makes photography in Hawaii different?
A vacation in Hawaii will always be in anyone’s bucket list. Beautiful beach, fine sand, peaceful ocean and a good Mai Tai – it is the perfect escape! And if you are blessed enough to be in this paradise, there is no better way to preserve it than to have amazing photos.
Do you have a favorite setting for portrait sessions?
My portrait sessions usually take place in the famous Waikiki Beach with the majestic Diamond Head as the backdrop. Sessions can be done anywhere on the island that a client desires. Waikiki beach is my favorite spot for this kind of portrait session. Aside from the ease of being near where the guests are staying, Waikiki has a gorgeous sunset!
You said earlier that you get emotional sometimes when you work on a project, tell us more?
I realize that when I take a photograph, I sort of become part of someone’s life. I remember tearing up while editing photos of a family portrait session. One day, that family will look back at those old photos and relive that moment. They might forget my name and who I am but it was my vision that preserved that moment – and I was able to capture that through my lens and vision.

Tips for Securing Your Dream Wedding Venue

Are you planning your dream Hawaiian wedding?  Feeling a little overwhelmed with it all?  Our friends over at Modern Weddings have a great list of tips for securing your dream wedding venue:

Don’t let securing your dream wedding venue turn into a scene from the movie Bride Wars. Keep in mind top weddingvenues book up months..even years.. in advance. Saturdays during the summer months are the prime time for weddings so landing your dream venue may take some careful planning and skill! Here are a few tips to keep in mind from Wise Weddings for considering your wedding location.

1. Planning Is Key

Do your research and make a list of venues you love in your area. If you are planning a destination wedding or in an unfamilar city– try My Hotel Wedding! Simply type in the zip code of your dream location and find hotel that offer wedding packages!

2. List the Pros & Cons

Once you’ve narrowed it down, list the pros and cons of what each place has to offer. Consider things like catering, in-house wedding specialists, space, etc.

3. Choose the location that will meet your needs

Make sure the venue has enough space to comfortably fit your guest list.  If your having an intimate ceremony, make sure it provides a cozy atmosphere.

4. Consider Your Guests

Can the space accommodate guests with special needs or elderly? Make sure it is equipped with the proper amenities (elevator, railings, etc).

5.  Think About Travel Time

When factoring in where your should host your reception, consider it’s distance from the ceremony site. Also, if you have a lot of guests traveling from long distances– decide whether it’s worth hosting your reception in a hotel convenient for guests or if there is lodging nearby.

Oahu Destination Wedding { Kualoa Ranch }

Modern Weddings Hawaii brings you the picturesque Oahu destination wedding of Leslie and David. The Kualoa Ranch Wedding was held at the Hale Molii pavillion and captured by Rachel Robertson Photography. The bride and groom who live in Alaska, met online and dated for two years. David popped the question on the beach watching the sunset!

They were attracted to Kualoa Ranch because of it’s ” natural Hawaiian scenery minus the hotels and a large beautiful tree to have party under.”  The couple had planned many pre-wedding activities for their guests attending the wedding. They enjoyed a booze cruise, paintball, a bridal shower at the Modern Honololu, and a post-wedding brunch! For their theme, they went with a “sunset” colors, nature inspired, relaxed feel–very fitting for Hawaii! For decor, they used their natural theme as inspiration and mixed organic sea life decor with warm colored flowers, and accents. The bridesmaids were able to pick their own dresses following the color palette and  and groomsmen wore RVCA long-sleeve button-ups, matching belts, khakis, and Rainbow brand flip-flops. The bride got her stunning dress from a consignment store in California.

After the beautiful ceremony, the celebration continued throughout the reception with dancing, sparklers, and a photo booth! Fire knife dancers and hula provided great authentic entertainment. Guests were given favors with a Hawaiian flare including sea shells, Honolulu Cookie Company cookies, matches, and a wine stopper or bottle opener. The couple even  provided bus-rides back to Honolulu and Kailua after the bar was emptied– which made for a funny end of the evening!

4. Engagements
Announce your engagement in style on the beautiful white sandy beaches of Lanikai… or go all out and pop the question during the shoot! She’ll be so focused on enjoying the session that she’ll never see it coming!

A Hint of Hawaii- Wedding Inspiration from Modern Weddings Hawaii

We’re excited to share Veronica and Rolo’s Hawaiian inspired beach wedding captured by Maik Dobiey Wedding Photography. Together they live at the beach just south of Lima, Peru and both love the ocean,  beach culture, and Rolo is a passionate surfer. So there was no better place on earth for their wedding than a tropical beach.

Hawaii Beach Wedding

Since Veronica’s parents have a house right at the beach just north of Mancora, in northern Peru, it was the perfect location! Their day was filled with many Hawaiian-style features and lots of Aloha .  Everyone was wearing sandals or bare-foot and wore Hawaii Shirts. This gave the very relaxed and laid-back feeling of the islands. Both the ceremony and reception took place close to the water and made for a beautiful evening!

Congratulations to the beautiful couple, thank you for sharing your special day!

Transportation and shuttle services around Oahu

Not everyone who comes to Hawaii to visit chooses to rent a car, and even if you do, there are other transportation options to consider when deciding what to see or do while you are here on Oahu. For example, there are guided tours and charter services available for a day sight-seeing trip, if you have a large group or just want to “sit back and enjoy the ride” with a professional tour guide! Perhaps you are planning a wedding and are looking for limo service, or maybe you just need an airport shuttle. Another fun way to see the island is by biking and there are bike rentals available. Oahu also has excellent bus service and you might want to find the bus routes and schedules ahead of time. All of these options are to be found in the Transportation and Important Information sections of our directory. There are so many ways to enjoy Oahu!
