What do all of these events have in common? They are all happening this last weekend in July, here on beautiful Oahu! You can always enjoy the many gorgeous beaches, scenic drives, and myriad of ocean activities which abound here, but you might also be interested in something a little bit different. If that’s the case then one of these upcoming events might be just what you are looking for!
The ancient Chinese tradition of Dragon Boat Races has become a popular sport in many countries around the world and may even become an Olympic event soon! On July 25th, at Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu, teams of paddlers will compete in Oahu’s 600 meter Dragon Boat Race. In their long narrow boats decorated with a dragon head and tail, as they stroke to the beat of a drum, teams will attempt to be the first to “capture the flag”. It is a fun and colorful spectacle the whole family can enjoy! See more about the Dragon Boat Races here
Also on July 25th, in Waimea Valley on Oahu’s North Shore, there will be a summer concert from 11am-3pm on the main lawn, with performances by three of Hawaii’s best…Melveen Leed, Pomaika’I Lyman, and Yoza. The ticket price includes admission to Waimea Valley so come early and enjoy a walk around the grounds or even a swim under the waterfall! It promises to be a beautiful setting for some beautiful music! See more about the Waiamea Concert Series here
Last but certainly not least is Polo, on the beach in Mokuleia, on July 26th. The games start at 1:30 but gates open at 11 and, again, come early to enjoy a swim at the only polo field located right beside the beach! While there will be food and beverages available at the clubhouse, you also are welcome to bring your own eats and tailgate or picnic while you enjoy one of the oldest “ball and stick” games in the world. Afterwards, you can stay until dark and enjoy live music! General admission starts at $12. See more about the Polo Event here
All of these events are family friendly and all take place in beautiful tropical settings, which makes them even more special. No matter what you choose, from polo, to dragon boats, to summer concerts, have a wonderful last weekend in July, here on Oahu!
